Mensaje del Profesor John Ruggie
It is a real pleasure to send greetings to all of you gathered this evening in Bogota for the launch of CREER, a new regional centre to foster responsible business in Colombia and throughout Latin America being developed by my colleagues from the Institute for Human Rights and Business. Colombia has been a leader in this region and internationally in seeking to advance responsible business practices including through implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the OECD Guidelines for Multinationals and other standards which aim to make corporate respect for human rights a reality. In all of my visits to Colombia as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative I found great interest and commitment on the part of my interlocutors here. As Chair of IHRB, I’m thrilled that we are working closely with a range of actors in Colombia to help bring your knowledge and lessons learned in this area to the wider region as well as encouraging multi-stakeholder dialogue and action in Latin American countries who have their own experiences to share. Despite the significant challenges that remain, progress is being made in moving the business and human rights agenda from global principles to practical actions that make a real difference in people’s lives. With the launch of CREER, we have an important new platform for region-wide dialogue, research and capacity building that can make a significant contribution to scaling up successes over the coming years. Many thanks to my colleagues and all of our supporters for making this evening possible. And thanks to all of you for your commitment to engaging with us in the important work ahead.
